Sri Lanka Day November 19th, 1976 For the first time in history, The City of Los Angeles proclaimed November 19th, 1976 as Sri Lanka Day
The Lion Flag of Sri Lanka was raised for the first time in the City of Los Angeles 50 years ago!
in 1976, Rajah Rutnam, President of the Sri Lanka America Association of Southern California (SLAASC), working closely with Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, Neville Kanakaratne, successfully persuaded Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to proclaim November 19, 1976, as “Sri Lanka Day” in the City of Los Angeles.
The Sri Lankan Government was represented at the historic occasion by MacDonald Beckett, Sri Lanka’s Honorary Consul. More than 200 Sri Lankan expatriates gathered at the ceremony opposite Los Angeles City Hall, where the Sri Lankan flag was raised by the Honorary Consul, marking a proud and memorable moment for the Sri Lankan community in Southern California.
Following the flag-raising ceremony, Mayor Tom Bradley hosted a reception at Los Angeles City Hall in honor of the Sri Lankan community.
Among those attending were Chintha and Raja de Silva; Nandani and Raja Suma; Drs. Swarna and Daya Perera; Srilal Pieris; Bernadette Perera; Rajah Rutnam, President of SLAASC (1976) and wife Patsy; Kirthi de Silva; Al Jansen, Vice President of SLAASC; Iswari and Rene Camou; Pearlyn and Roland Wanigatunga; Mike Khalid; Sherine de Silva; Marnie Moore; Ratnam Swami; and Anthony de Silva.
Raja de Silva also served as Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee.
The proclamation of Sri Lanka Day in Los Angeles was a significant milestone for the Sri Lankan-American community. It demonstrated the growing presence and contribution of Sri Lankans in Southern California and reflected the strong relationship that had developed between the Sri Lankan community, the diplomatic mission, and the City of Los Angeles.
For SLAASC, the occasion remains an important part of its early history and a testament to the leadership and dedication of those who worked to bring the Sri Lankan community together and proudly represent Sri Lanka in Southern California.

Dr. Chelsea Edirisuriya and Pavanjot, son of Karl and Rinder Guraya, a spectacular wedding took place in Sintra, Portugal on Friday and Saturday, August 14-15th 2026. The multicultural wedding was filled with two days of special, beautiful traditions including a Punjabi Sikh ceremony and Sri Lankan Buddhist Poruwa ceremony at Penha Longa Ritz Carlton Resort. The reception was held in the beautiful Forte da Cruz, a castle on the beach of Portugal. Guests arrived from all over the world including the US, Sri Lanka, India, Canada, and London.
Who is this beautiful girl? She is none other than Shiyana Gunasekara of the United States Department of Energy
Shiyana Gunasekara is an international energy economics advisor at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC. She advises on energy security, natural gas and LNG markets, and decarbonization policies. Previously, she worked as an energy and climate consultant providing business advisory and dispute resolution consulting services to international energy companies, foreign investors, and government-owned entities. Ms. Gunasekara’s interests include development of energy sources, infrastructure, and markets and economic opportunities in the Indian Ocean region. Prior to consulting, she researched post-war economic development as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to Sri Lanka. Ms. Gunasekara holds a M.A. in International Economics and International Affairs with a specialization in South Asian Affairs from Johns Hopkins University, School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. in Economics and Political Studies from Pitzer College.

Obituaries – Sad News
Charles Allen Schokman passed away on September 7th, 2026 in Australia. He leaves behind his wife Claudette, daughter Fiona and son Chris. A Celebration Funeral Service for Charles Allen Schokman will be held on Thursday Sept 17th at 11.00am at Berwick Church of Christ, 446 Centre Rd Berwick
Rev. Fr. DON CHRISTOPHER JULIUS, of the Archdiocese of Colombo, expired on 12th September 2026. He was the son of the late Don Savarial and late K M Engratia Rodrigo. The mortal remains of Rev. Fr. Christopher Julius were brought to the Archbishop’s House Chapel on 12th Sep. at 6.00 p.m. and lay in state until September 13th at 9.00 a.m. following this, his remains will be transferred to his home parish, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Yattowita, where they will lie in state. The Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, 14th September at 4.00 p.m. at the same Church, after which interment will take place at the Church Cemetery, Yattowita. Archbishop’s House, Borella.
Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen
Fiery Citrus Salsa
INGREDIENTS
- 1green apple
- 2 fresh red chillies, halved and seeded
- 1garlic clove
- 8 fresh mint leaves
- juice of 1 lemon
- salt and ground black pepper
METHOD
1.Slice the bottom off the orange so that it stands firmly on a chopping board. Using a large, sharp knife, remove the peel slicing from the top of the orange.
2.Fold the orange in one hand over the bowl.Slice towards the middle of the fruit, to one side of a segment, and then gently twist the knife to ease the segment away from the membrane and out of the orange. Remove to remove all of the segments and squeeze any juice from the remaining membrane.
3.Peel the apple, slice it into wedges and remove the core.
4.Place the chillies in a blender or food processor with the orange segments and juice, apple wedges, garlic and mint.
5.Process until smooth, with the motor running, pour in the lemon juice.
6.Season, pour into a bowl or small pitcher and serve immediately.
SERVES 4
This very unusual Salsa makes a fantastic marinadefor all kinds of shell fish, and it is deliciuos when drizzled over freshly barbecued meat. If you are feeling really fiery, don’t seed the chillies!
That will make the Salsa particularly hot and fierce!
