US 10-pct tariff will boost Sri Lanka exporter competitiveness: Finance Ministry

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development said the United States’ decision to lower its proposed additional Section 301 tariff on Sri Lankan goods to 10 percent from 12.5 percent will deliver positive outcomes for local exporters.The revised rate follows Sri Lanka’s recent policy move to impose an import ban on goods produced using forced labor. The lower duty gives the island nation a competitive edge over non-compliant economies facing the default 12.5 percent tariff.“This situation creates a positive outcome for exporters and reflects Sri Lanka’s continuous commitment to promoting fair trade, responsible business practices, and internationally accepted labor standards,” the Ministry said.
S&P says Sri Lanka’s Economy showing resilience, keeps rating stable

S&P Global Ratings has affirmed Sri Lanka’s long- and short-term sovereign credit ratings at ‘CCC+/C’, while maintaining a stable outlook, citing continued economic recovery, strong revenue growth and improvements in fiscal management.
The ratings agency said Sri Lanka’s economy has remained resilient despite multiple external challenges, with increased government revenue helping to support fiscal consolidation and reduce debt servicing pressures.

Sri Lanka pharma sets sights on US$ 1.8tn global market

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (SLPMA) held in Colombo this week, industry leaders outlined a bold vision to transform the sector into the country’s next thrust industry. By capitalising on an abundant pool of high-quality science graduates and strategic regional proximity, manufacturers believe Sri Lanka can carve out a highly specialized, globally competitive export niche.

Obituaries – Sad News

Kanthie Karuna Arseculeratne (87) of Los Angeles, Ca. passed away on June 20th, 2026. Daughter of Marcelin and Lilian Perera, She was preceded in death by her siblings, Hubert, Lionell, Prema, Colmen, Kusum, Nanda, Manika, and Patrick, as well as her twin brother Francis. Her beloved sister Anula De Silva remains the last surviving sibling. Mother of Ruvini, Cindy, and Rod, and grandmother of Sofia and Jake. Sons-in-law Kevin Ferris, Sean Kraus, Esq. and daughter in-law Dr. Sujee Dissanayake, and many nieces and nephews.

Sir Christopher Ondaatje (93) passed away on July 20th 2026 in the Bahamas. Born in Sri Lanka in 1933, he moved to England for schooling before emigrating to Canada in 1956. Husband of
Valda Bulins. Father of David Ondaatje, Sarah (Seira) Ondaatje and Jans Ondaatje.
Son of Philip Mervyn Ondaatje and Enid Doris Gratiaen. Brother of Michael Ondaatje and Gillian Ondaatje.
Justin Lyn Perera (91) passed away on July 24th 2026 in Wellington, New Zealand. Formerly of the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka and later of the New Zealand Parliament. Husband of Miriam (ANZ Bank of New Zealand), father of Ramesh and Dinesh, father-in-law of Neluka and Roanne, grandfather of Ranisha,Shenara, Dhiren and Romel, brother and uncle. A funeral Mass was held on July 29th in Wellington, New Zealand.
Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Warm chickpea salad with chili and lime dressing
- 2 tablespoons peanut oil
- 1 yellow(brown onion), finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 1 1/3 cups (14 oz/440g) drained, canned chickpeas
- juice of two limes
- 1/4 cup (2 fl oz/160ml) chili oil
- 1/2 cup (3/4 oz/20g) fresh cilantro (fresh coriander
- leaves
- salt and freshly ground black pepper
- crusty bread, warmed, for serving
METHOD.
Heat oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until soft,3-5 minutes. Add chickpeas and stir until heated through,about 3 minutes. Reduce heat to low,add lime juice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
Add chilli oil and cilantro and season with salt and pepper. Serve warm with bread.
Serves 4.
