Advocata Institute wins 2022 Templeton Freedom Award – Dhananath Fernando
Advocata Institute, an independent policy think-tank based in Colombo, has won the 2022 Templeton Freedom Award by Atlas Network. Advocata’s chief executive officer Dhananath Fernando accepted the award and a 100,000 US dollar grand prize at the Atlas Network Freedom Dinner held in New York last week. Since 2004, the award has identified and recognised the most exceptional and innovative contributions to the understanding of free enterprise, and the public policies that encourage prosperity, innovation, and human fulfillment via free competition.

Addressing the Wenzhou International Import Expo, Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona, extolled the high quality of Sri Lanka’s agricultural exports. Black tea which is, by far, the major agricultural import from Sri Lanka to China.
Using the opportunity to promote tourism to Sri Lanka, Ambassador Kohona said that with the expected easing of Chinese travel restrictions, and the winter’s cold beginning to bite. We have a target of 1 million Chinese tourists once travel restrictions are relaxed. Ambassador Kohona wished the Expo great success and invited the guests to visit the Sri Lanka pavilion to experience Sri Lanka’s high quality products.

The Thomian alumni of California ended their 9 rounds Golf tournament series for 2022, on November 12th, with the final round being held at Porter Valley Country Club. Pujitha De Silva of Sri Lanka schools cricket fame and the past President of the Thomian Alumni of California (TAC) with the highest points earned in this series was the winner. 18 Golfers participated throughout the year.

’Genius’ 10-year-old school girl of SL origin is smarter than Einstein
A 10-year-old school girl of Sri Lankan origin has proved she is “smarter than Einstein” with an impressive IQ score.
Ariana Dambarawa Hewage, who lives near Leeds Road in Huddersfield, took a Mensa IQ test recently and scored 162 – said to be “genius” level. The likes of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawkins’ estimated IQ is 160. Ariana, who attends St Patrick’s Catholic Primary Academy in George Avenue, hopes to become a famous scientist herself some day. “She’s my genius” said dad Janaka Dambarawa Hewage. He said: “When she took her exams recently we realised just how smart she is.”

On November 22, 2022, the President of Sri Lanka Honorable Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Secretary to the Minister of Defense Kamal Gunaratne, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne and the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung attended the commissioning of the Navy Ship Vijayabahu, formerly the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Douglas Munro, in Colombo Harbor. The United States had donated the ship to Sri Lanka on October 26, 2021 as part of its continuing commitment to strengthen Sri Lanka’s ability to protect its maritime sovereignty and security.

Rajan David Moonesinghe (33) passed away under tragic circumstances in Austin, Texas. Son of Ruth and Kavan Moonesinghe, brother of Johann, Mark and Jimol. “It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved son and brother, Rajan David Moonesinghe, on November 15, 2022.
Rajan was the best of us, our shining star, who loved fiercely, and gave all of himself to family and friends. We take comfort in the knowledge that he is home with our Lord Jesus Christ and are thankful for the gift of 33 years that we had with someone so special. A funeral is being planned in Los Angeles and more information will be shared as arrangements are made.” – Ruth Moonesinghe

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen
Suan-la Tang
(Hot and sour soup)
Ingredients
6 cloud ears and 12 golden needles or 4 chinese dried
mushrooms, soaked in warm water for 30 minutes
1 cake fresh bean curd, neatly diced
2/3 cup pork fillet
3 tablespoons cornstarch
5/8 cup water
1-2 tablespoons oil
1 small onion, peeled and chopped
61/4 cups home – made beef stock
or consomme
4 tablespoons rice-wine vinegar
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
freshly ground black pepper and salt
1 egg beaten
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2-3 scallions, shredded
Method
Drain the cloud ears and golden needles
or the mushrooms, which should be nicely plump.
Cut into thin shreds and set aside with the bean curd.
Finely slice the pork into match stick size pieces and dust
with cornstarch. Blend the remaining cornstarch with water
and reserve. Heat the oil in a Chinese claypot or wok over
a gentle heat and cook the onion till soft. Turn up the heat
slightly and fry the pork slices until they change color.
Pour in the stock, cloud ears, needles or mushrooms, cook
for 10 to 15 minutes, then thicken with the cornstarch
paste. Add bean curd, vinegar, soy sauce and black pepper
and salt to taste. Lower the heat and drizzle in the egg from
a balloon whisk or your finger tips so that it forms threads
of mixture.Add sesame oil just before serving. Garnish with
the scallions if desired.
Serves 6.
