“Ecological Floating Islands” to Purify Beira Lake…

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today released a thousand ecological floating islands to Beira Lake initiating the purifying process of the lake. Beira Lake has been polluted due to unauthorized urbanization and improper upgrading of sewerage infrastructure in Colombo. The “Ecological floating islands” method was implemented under the guidance of Chairman of Land Development Corporation, Retired Major General M.R.W. de Soyza.Ecologist Ranoshi Siripala points out that the experiment conducted for water purification by planting plants such as Cannas, Savandara and Heliconia using PVC pipes,bamboo and foam mattresses as floating supports has yielded successful results.

 

Raja Edirisuriya Takes Over as BOI Chairman

Leading civil engineer and former Ambassador to Brazil, Raja Edirisuriya has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Investment by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. 

Edirisuriya took up his appointment on 15 December. Currently the Colombo Port City Development Project Executive Project Management Director, Edirisuriya previously served as Chairman of the Urban Settlement Development Authority (USDA), Sri Lanka State Engineering Corporation (SEC), and Mihin Lanka Airlines.

680 Pound ‘Queen of Asia’ Natural Blue Sapphire Unveiled in Sri Lanka

 

Officials in Sri Lanka unveiled a gigantic (683-pound corundum blue sapphire recently, they claim is the largest of its kind in the world. Local gemologists, who have examined the sapphire, said it was one of the rarest gems ever found due to its size. It has been aptly named “Queen of Asia,” but international organizations are yet to certify the precious stone. Found three months ago in a gem pit, the sapphire was put on display at the home of one of the gem pit owners in Horana, south of Colombo.

Alexander George Anton Mendis passed away in Melbourne,​ Australia. Former Chairman,​ Education Services Commission of the Public Services Commission,​ Deputy Director General of Education,​ Member of University Grants Commission,​ Director – Institute of Workers Education/​University of Colombo,​ Member of Sri Lanka Sports Council,​ Director,​ Sri Lanka Tourist Board. Husband of Swinitha (nee Nanayakkara),​ father of Priyantha,​ Sajith,​ Indira,​ Champake and Thusitha,​ father-in-law of Sandeepika (Sandhu),​ Rohan,​ Kaumudi (Munchi) and Katherine,​ grandfather of Rivi,​ Meth Miara,​ Shanaya,​ Shevin,​ Danika,​ Callum and Taneisha. Funeral took place on December 15th. at Boyd Chapel Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen

Jaggery Souffle Ingredients 2 cups thick coconut milk 1 teaspoon vanilla  1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg 4 eggs 1/2- 1/4 lb. grated jaggery 4 teaspoons gelatine soaked in 1/2 cup cold water   Method Dissolve the soaked gelatine over boiling  water. Mix yolks, coconut milk and jaggery and strain. Cook over a low flame till custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from fire  and allow to cool. Add dissolved gelatine and flavoring. Lastly fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Rinsa ring mold in cold water and shake off the water but do not wipe. Pour the custard into the mold and place in cold water (This will make the souffle come out in layers of different shades of brown when unmolded). Put the mold in the refrigerator for 6- 8 hrs. to set. To unmold ease the sides of the souffle with a knife, turn over and gently tap the mold or place your hands on the mold for a few minutes and for the warmth of your hands the souffle will unmold. Decorate with roasted cadjunuts and cream. Note: The souffle should be unmoulded just before serving and not too long ahead of time. SERVES 4-6.
