Ceylon Today - Daily Finance Today

Rutnam Eyes USD 10M Revival for RanmiNitenna Tele - Cinema Park
By Ishara Gamage -April 9, 2024

Renowned film director and Chairman of Asian Film Location Services Ltd. (established in 1980), Chandran Rutnam, plans to lease the now-defunct Ranminitenna Tele-Cinema Park in Hambantota with an initial investment of USD 10 million. Speaking to Finance Today, he said, “We, Asian Film Location Services Ltd are in the final stages of presenting the proposal to the Government. In the first phase alone, we could generate USD 25 million to USD 30 million annually by providing equipment and studio rentals, services, and experienced and talented technicians, significantly boosting the country’s foreign exchange reserves.” He mentioned that despite the ideological issues among the bureaucrats and the lack of vision through ignorance among state officials, he is determined to successfully implement this project with the support of President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Initially, the park encompassed 125 acres, including a 50-acre Jambugaswewa tank. For future expansion, it was extended to 235 acres. The land designated for Ranminitenna Tele-Cinema Park was reserved by Cabinet Memorandum No. 08/1084/338/024 dated 11 June, 2008. With a portfolio of over 75 foreign films that Rutnam has brought in and shot in the island nation, it generates more than USD 600 million. Rutnam’s determinations extend beyond the film industry, with the aim of elevating Sri Lanka’s status in the global economic and cultural arena. “Sri Lanka has the potential to become a global centre for movie production. But this opportunity remains largely untapped due to the lack of knowledge of this industry and its marketing ability. Reimagining Sri Lanka’s narrative requires understanding the potential of the industry, the vision, strategic investments, and a major strategic overhaul. Not the mere continuity of past methods and stagnation.” According to him, the entertainment industry is one of the five leading sources of foreign exchange in developing Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India. He opined: “Despite Sri Lanka’s scenic beauty and accessibility, the movie industry fails to attract global attention due to inadequate infrastructure requirements.” Rutnam, with his past global experience, has proposed a revolutionary investment strategy to inject over USD 150 million into the Sri Lankan economy. “Developing high-tech virtual sound stages and other state-of-the-art systems and current technologies that keep up with the fast-changing and constantly moving creative and profitable entertainment industry. “This effort will not only change Ranminitenna Tele-Cinema Park but also ensure that Sri Lanka becomes more appealing to international film producers, which will generate more income than the tourism industry,” he remarked. “After the production and success of the iconic film The Bridge on the River Kwai, which was shot entirely in Sri Lanka, no government or tourist authority had the vision for over 50 years to rebuild the bridge as must-see’ tourist attraction. Other countries have jumped on the opportunities. Example: New Zealand, where the film Lord of the Rings was shot. There are more tourists visiting the film set where the movie was shot than the population of the country. There were numerous missed opportunities in Sri Lanka purely due to the lack of knowledge coupled with the lack of creative vision”, he further stated. The current plan, one that the Government fully supports, already has initial foreign funding. Rutnam, who has just returned from Mumbai and Chennai in India, states that the Indian film industry, which produces 2000 films a year, is eager to shoot in Sri Lanka, provided we have the desirable facilities. Rutnam is confident that Sri Lanka will soon be —

“The Film Capital of Asia.”

Dr Sarath Gunapala's Invention shot into space

JPL Scientist Dr. Sarath Gunapala was in Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida to witness his HyTI (Hyperspectral Thermal Imager) launch. HyTI (Hyperspectral Thermal Imager) is designed with the focus on understanding, modeling, mapping, and monitoring the world’s agricultural lands, and water resources, as well as for studies pertaining to forest fires, volcanoes, and a number of other applications (e.g., stubble burning in agricultural lands). Climate variability and expanding populations are putting unprecedented pressure on agricultural croplands and their water use, which are vital for ensuring global food and water security in the twenty-first century. Currently, on average worldwide, croplands use 80-90% of all human water consumption. HyTI data and derived information products will be invaluable in advancing our knowledge on multiple fronts in crop type mapping, crop productivity modeling, crop water use assessments, and crop water productivity (“crop per drop”) mapping.

Slash flesh of the chicken several times. Finely chop the shallots and set aside. Pound the garlic, nuts, ginger, lemongrass and chilli powder together. Mix with soy sauces and oil and pour over the chicken pieces. Marinade for 30 minutes. Heat oil in a wok, fry the onions without browning. Add the marinade to the remaining ingredients in the wok. Fry, then add stock. Cook for 5 minutes and serve the sauce with the chicken.
I chose to share one of my favorite chicken dishes at Easter. Please serve with the traditional yellow rice and customary sides. I hope you enjoy a different chicken dish. Happy Easter!

Pomegranate-Orange Chicken.

Pomegranate-Orange Chicken.

 Ingredients

  • 1 large orange,zest finely grated, juiced
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • 11/2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 6 teaspoons Canola oil
  • Kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup lower-slat chicken broth
  • 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 medium parsnips, peeled and slice   on the diagonal 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 red onion, peeled and cut into
  •   3/4-inch thick wedges
  • 1 4-lb.chicken, cut into 8 serving pieces,
  •  trimmed of extra skin and fat, patted   dry
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

Method

Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 400 *F. In a medium saucepan, combine the orange juice and pomegranate juice.

Bring to a boil over medium heat and reduce to 1/4 cup, about 15 minutes.

Add 1/2 teaspoon thyme, the cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

Divide the mixture between two small bowls.

To one bowl add 2 teaspoons of oil and 1/2 tspn.

salt To the other add the chicken broth, all but 1teaspoon of the orange zest, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Scatter the sweet potatoes, parsnips, and onion over the bottom of a metal, glass or ceramic baking  dish that measures about 10x15x2inches.

Toss with the remaining 4 teaspoons of oil and 1 teaspoon thyme Arrange the chicken skin side up, on top of the vegetables and brush with all of the juice-oil mixture. Roast for 30 minutes.

Remove the pan from oven and reduce the temperature to 375*F. Pour the juice-broth mixture around the chickenpieces and scatter the walnuts around the chicken.

Return the pan to the oven and roast till the vegetables are tender  and an instant-read thermometer registers 165*F in several pieces of chicken,20 to 30 minutes.

Transfer the chicken to a warmed platter. Use a slotted spoon to arrange the vegetables and walnuts around the chicken.

Sprinkle the vegetables with a little salt and sprinkle the remaining orange zest over all. Tilt the roasting pan so that the juices gather in one corner.

With a large shallow spoon skim as much fat as possible from the pan sauce. Season the sauce to taste with salt and pepper and pour into a pitcher to pass at the table.

Serves 4-6. Please email me for all your questions and requests.

A tribute to our beloved son and one of a kind human being Vernon – By Marie Wambeek

Vernon Glen WambeekVernon Glen Wambeek was our eldest son, named after his father Vernon however everyone knew him as Glen. He studied at Wesley College in Colombo where he ended up becoming a prefect. He was into various sports including Rugby, Cricket and Athletics, in addition to being a Judo National Champion. He also took part in school plays; his most memorable role was when he played Julius Caesar in a Shakespearean Drama Competition which he ended up winning.

Glen moved to Australia in 1977 and started his career in the hotel industry, eventually opening up his own restaurant in Crows Nest known as the ‘Rangoon Racquet Club’. It was voted one of the top restaurants in New South Wales. My son was a hard worker; he worked tirelessly to build his company over 29 years. He also wanted to pay it forward, which involved enrolling in a mentor program at a local school. While he gained much satisfaction from his work and achievements, his pride and joy were his 2 sons. Losing Glen 2 years ago is a heartache that my husband Vernon and I have to bear. We will hold on to our memories of our kind, generous and loving son. We will miss him every day for the rest of our lives.

Glossy Ibis: Jewel of Jaffna

Glossy Ibis: Jewel of Jaffna

Sri Lanka is known for its beautiful diversity of bird life- at least 468 species of birds 34 endemic species and at least 226 migrant species. Within Sri Lanka, Jaffna and the Northern Province are also home to an array of birds, from storks, egrets and herons to kingfishers, kites and eagles and even ducks and grebes. However, while many birds are well documented and widely appreciated such as the migrating Greater flamingos, there is one bird species that does not receive anywhere near the attention it deserves: the Glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus).

China Renews Support for Sri Lanka

In a significant diplomatic encounter, President Xi Jinping extended China’s unwavering commitment to aiding Sri Lanka in achieving economic stability and progress, devoid of any political agenda. This gesture was made during a meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing with President Ranil Wickremesinghe who was on a four-day official visit to China attending the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. It was also the first Presidential-level meeting since Wickremesinghe assumed office 14 months ago. Hambantota Port Surpasses Half a Million Transshipment Units, Outpacing Previous Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) Records

The Hambantota International Port (HIP) has achieved a milestone by handling over half a million transshipment units by September, exceeding the port’s previous year’s roll-on/roll-off (RORO) figures. “As the global economy recovers gradually, we continue to aggressively market our location and services. As a result, RORO transshipment is steadily increasing at HIP and we have been able to better our volumes year-on-year,” HIPG COO Tissa Wickremasinghe said. Last year, HIP hit the 500,000-transshipment unit mark in November, closing 2022 with a total volume of 558,200 local and transshipment cargo handled, whereas this year the port was able to achieve the milestone within the third quarter of 2023, setting a new milestone. The port’s RORO business has seen significant growth in the past 5 years and it is now an attractive destination for transshipment of vehicles.

A Sri Lankan Baker’s Baguette Conquers France

A Sri Lankan Baker’s Baguette Conquers France

This year France marked the 30th anniversary of the “Grand Prize of the Traditional French Baguette,” organized by the Paris City Hall. Tharshan Selvarajah, 37, an intense bearded man with a fierce work ethic, won, with his creation edging out 126 other baguettes. His prize? The honor, for the next year, of delivering those baguettes to President Macron and his staff. He also received some $4,250. The baker’s popularity is now such that long lines form outside his boulangerie, Au Levain des Pyrénées, on the fringes of eastern Paris. Selvarajah explained what made his bread special. Seated in a nearby cafe, he held up his hands.

“God gave us all different hands,” he said. A smile broke across his face. “My mother’s chicken curry and my wife’s chicken curry may use the same chicken but they do not taste the same,” he said. “God gave me the hands to make the best baguette in France! I am never angry with the flour as I knead the dough.”

A Unique Publication Presented to the President During his Recent Visit to Address the U.N.

A copy of ‘The Kingdom of Ruhuna: Home of the Yala National Park”, a newly published coffee table book, was presented to the President Ranil Wickramasinghe in New York during a glamourous reception hosted by the Sri Lanka Mission to the United Nations. A copy was also presented to the Foreign Minister Aly Sabry. The book was recently launched at the ‘The Beauty of Sri Lanka’ photographic Exhibition held by the America Sri Lanka Photographic Art Society Los Angeles (ASPAS), in association with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles at the UCLA Art Gallery. It was authored by the founder President of ASPAS, Suriya Jayalath Perera, an accomplished photographer and wildlife enthusiast who transports the reader through the lens of his camera to Ruhuna’s hidden gems, where they can witness majestic wildlife in their natural habitats – from elusive leopards prowling through lush jungles to colorful birds soaring across vibrant skies. His painstaking research work over two years of residence in the Yala area, originally carried out for his Master’s thesis written in Sinhala at the Kelaniya University, was recently published with a historical narration of the people and places of the region in an attractively published coffee table book containing unmatched photography including some historical ruins deep in the jungle hitherto unknown even to historians. It was compiled and edited by Dr. Nandi Jasentuliyana, who supervised its translation and publication.  In his introduction to it, he points out the critical role played by the Kingdom of Ruhuna in the history of the Island from its inception in the 5th Century on many occasions. The Kingdoms of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were in turmoil almost from the very beginning of their history in the fifth century B.C. due to periodic Indian invasions of  Cholas, Pandyas, and Pallavas forcing some of its people with its rulers to flee to the South and eventually to be reclaimed by Prince Dutugamunu from the ruling family of the Kingdom of Ruhuna who led an army from Ruhuna.

JAPCHAI (Korean Noodle Speciality)

Ingredients

  • 4 cooked potions of dangmeon cooked sweet potato starch noodles
  • 1 Carrot, peeled and julienned
  • 1/2 Onion, cut into 1/4″ slices
  • 2 cups oyster mushrooms, cut into bitesized pieces
  • 1 1/2 TBSP white granulated sugar
  • 3 TBSP Soya Sauce
  • 2 tspn. vegetable oil
  •  Pinch of Black Pepper (optional)
  • 1 tspn. roasted Sesame seeds (optional)

STEP 1

If Danmyeon noodles are long, carefully cut the noodles with scissors to make them fit the diameter of the diameter of the inner pot.

Lay the noodles in a criss-cross pattern to prevent clumping.

STEP 2

Lay the Carrots, Onions and mushrooms on top of noodles.

STEP 3.

In a small bowl, whisk sugar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, and 3/4 cup of water until well combined.

Drizzle liquid over the vegetables and noodles.

These quantities are sufficient to serve four or you can serve it as a side dish. I once served it with a

Sri Lankan Shrimp Curry and it was very nice. You  can even put some sauteed Shrimp in a little Chilli Sauce (not too much) or just drizzle with a spoon on top of the whole dish.

Should you have any questions or requests, please email me and I will be happy to help you.

This Korean Dish is absolutely lovely to look at and  a treat in it’s light but interesting flavors.

I am answering the first question which you will send.  The DANGMEON (sweet potato starch noodles) is not difficult to find in the Asian Markets and are sold in  packets.

Simple to make and is not drowned in different flavors.

Enjoy!

Tangy Crab Salad Sandwiches

Ingredients
8oz (250g) Japanese or baby cucumbers
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (150g) cooked or canned crabmeat
2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
4 fresh tofu buns or poppy seed bread or all
  grain bread rolls
1 teaspoon finely sliced Thai basil leaves,
  to serve.

CHILLI DRESSING
1 to 2 tablespoons minced red finger- length
  chilli
2 cloves garlic, minced
6 shallots or 1 small onion, minced
1/2 cup (125ml) water
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons fish sauce

METHOD
1.Make the Chilli Dressing by combining all the ingredients
in a saucepan and simmer over high heat for about 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has thickened. Remove and set aside to cool.
2.Peel the cucumbers, then slice very thinly. If using larger
cucumbers, cut in half lengthwise first, scrape out the seeds with a spoon before slicing the cucumbers. Rub the salt into the cucumber slices and mix well, then strain or squeeze the cucumber to remove the liquid. Add all but 1 Tablespoon of the chilli dressing, crabmeat, lemon or lime juice and pepper to the cucumber slices and toss to combine.
3.Make a slit in the Bread Rolls and stuff each roll with the
cocumber crab mixture, then top with reserved Chilli Dressing and Basil leaves when served.
NOTE: Japanese cucumbers are very small and crunchy, and almost seedless. Baby cucumbers.
