Lankan Muslims forgo Hajj pilgrimage to save forex for the country
Over 1,500 Muslims who were planning to make the Hajj pilgrimage this year have decided to skip in a bid to help Sri Lanka conserve scarce foreign exchange. Saudi Arabia had allocated a quota of nearly 1,600 persons from Sri Lanka for the Hajj this year. It was the first time in two years Sri Lanka got an opportunity as Saudi cancelled the practice of one of the pillars of Islam for outsiders in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. Sources said if Sri Lankans were to undertake the pilgrimage the cost would have been around $ 7 million.
Significant Contribution to Natural Sciences: Rohan Pethiyagoda
In what is probably the highest accolade paid to a Sri Lankan naturalist ever, this year’s Linnean Medal for Zoology was bestowed on Rohan David Pethiyagoda, who, though not a scientist in the formal sense, has as a naturalist been a guiding light with his magisterial Freshwater Fishes in Sri Lanka (1990) and been responsible for the discovery and/or description of almost a hundred new species of vertebrates from our island. The ceremony at Burlington House on May 24, and Rohan Pethiyagoda says he felt very honored as a Sri Lankan to be standing there.

Major General Yogendra Balaretnarajah VSV USP NDC – Former Chief of Staff, Sri Lanka Army – husband of late Sarojini, father of Anusha, Arjuna and Brahman and grandfather of Ashwin, Akshara and Bhishman, father-in-law of Mohan Villavarayan and Dr Anjana, son of late Mr & Mrs Balaretnaraja of Kachcheri – Nallur Road, brother of Mrs Chandramathy Ganesharatnam, late Mrs Ratnaleela Tissainayagam, Dammayanthy Nadaraja, Ganendra, Balendra, Rajendra and Nareshkumar. Funeral was at the General Cemetery, Kanatta new Crematorium 2nd June 2022 with Hindu rituals followed by escort under full military honors.

Crisp Asparagus Rolls with Cheese and xo Sauce
Ingredients
16 fresh large asparagus spears (about 1 lb./500g)
6 cups (1.5liters) water mixed with 1 tablespoon
of salt
Ice water
2 to 3 sheets filo pastry (20×11 in/50x28cm each)
for wrapping
6 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
4 teaspoons XO sauce
1/2 cup (1 stick 125 g) butter, melted
1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
Makes 16 pieces
Preparation time:20 minutes
Cooking time :10 minutes
METHOD
1.Cut off the bottom one-third of the asparagus spears and
discard. Bring the salted water to a boil in a saucepan and
blanch the asparagus spears for 3 minutes, then drain and
quickly plunge into the ice water.
2.Cut the filo pastry into long rectangular strips with the width measuring 2/3 the height of the asparagus spears.
3.Place the grated cheese and the asparagus spears on a large plate, then move the plate to and fro to roll the asparagus in the cheese until well coated.
4.Place each asparagus spear on a filo strip, close to one end. Spread 1/4 teaspoon of the XO sauce over the asparagus and brush the filo strip with the melted butter.
5.Wrap by rolling the filo strip around the asparagus spear 3 to 4 times and seal with a dab of the butter. Repeat with all the other asparagus spears.
6.Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and pan- fry the asparagus rolls on all sides, placing the sealed edge face down first, until the filo pastry turns golden brown. Serve hot on a platter.

A C M Lafir (89) Former Antonian, Nomads, Saracens, Kandy United and All Ceylon cricketer and one of the best soccer players, A.C.M. Lafir passed away in Colombo. He leaves his wife Carmini and three children Aashiq, Nirala and Mehera. His funeral was at Jawatte burial grounds.
Lakshman Hulugalle – Former Consul General of Sydney, Australia. Son of Rupa Hulugalle (nee Tennakoon) and (late) W. S. Hulugalle, brother of Sriyani Hulugalle, husband of Dilrukshi, father of Sachini, Sajini and Pamodhi, father-in-law of Ashan Polgampala and Nilanka Jayawardena; grandfather of Tiyesha and Tiyaan, son-in-law of Manel and (late) Chandra Ranatunga and brother-in-law of Ranjan and Prasadhini Ranatunga. Cremation was on 22nd May, at the Borella Cemetery. on Sunday, 22nd May.

Recipes From Roma’s Kitchen
Duck with Artichoke
Ingredients
4 confit Duck legs (about 300g/10 1/2oz each)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, crushed
4 tablespoons canned
tomato pulp or chunky
passatta/strained tomatoes
1 teaspoon
sweet paprika
1.25litres/generous 5 cups
hot chicken stock*
400g/14oz.can artichoke hearts
drained and halved
4 tablespoons freshly
chopped parsley
350g/scant 2 cups bomba,
Calasparra or aborio rice
salt
METHOD
Wipe away and discard the duck fat from the legs.
Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole and gently fry
and garlic for 10 minutes, until softened. Stir in the
tomato pulp and paprika and cook for 5 minutes,
until dry. Pour in the stock.
Stir in the artichoke hearts and rice, and arrange the
duck legs in the pan pressing down into the rice. Return
to a gentle simmer and cook for about twenty minutes
until the rice is al dente and the liquid almost absorbed.
Stir in the parsley and serve.
*TIP: make chicken stock with the leftover chicken carcas
from a roast chicken. Simply roughly drop or separate the
bones and cavity and place in a saucepan with some fresh
chopped fresh vegetables and 2 litres of cold water.
Simmer for 45 minutes until the stock has a good flavour.
Strain and reserve the stock.
SERVES 4.

Ministry Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka by its circular No 60 /2022 / file No FA/OSL/2/1 has instructed all missions abroad to help in establishing a database of Sri Lankans living in their assigned territories.
The government is of the opinion that having a centralized database will be of value in facilitating various official purposes such as providing emergency / consular assistance, policy formulation, promoting engagement of overseas Sri Lankans in economic / development activities, etc
Having experienced the difficulties of not having a properly updated Database in providing services to you all during the recent Pandemic,we are sure that you will agree with us how difficult it would be without a current database in an extremely unlikely event similar to having to evacuate Sri Lankans from Russia and Ukraine.
We at the Consulate General requested all Sri Lankan Associations and Temples in the areas coming under the purview of the Consulate General at Los Angeles to help us in revising the database of Sri Lankans living in California by email dated November 3rd, 2021. We can not say that we are happy with the response we had from these institutions.
We have also tried to gather information regarding the number of Sri Lankans living here from the census department to be advised that they don’t have a separate category as Sri Lankans apart from the main catogery of Asians.

Ceylon Baithulmal Fund launches ‘Iconic Masjids of Ceylon’ coffee table book
Although Sri Lanka’s Muslims form nearly 10% of the population of Sri Lanka, a comprehensive work detailing their main places of worship and recording their history, evolution and architecture has been a long-felt need. This lacuna is now filled with a well-illustrated coffee table book ‘Iconic Masjids of Ceylon’ authored by Asiff Hussein and published by the Ceylon Baithulmal Fund. The book covers 31 iconic mosques of Sri Lanka from what is supposed to be the oldest standing mosque in the country, Masjidul Abrar in Beruwala said to have been built in the year 920 but embellished over the years to the ultra-modern Jamiah Naleemiah Mosque that has been compared to a flying saucer.

Adrika Sri Bawan’s Quest to Empower the Less Privileged Her Way
Adrika Sri Bawan, the 26-year-old Melbourne-based lawyer, banker and mentor was born in Colombo, Adrika was adopted by Sharmalee and Sri Bawan when she was three months old. After an intense two-year legal battle with Australian Immigration, two-year-old Adrika arrived to start a new life when she was diagnosed with hearing loss. Profoundly hearing-impaired, Adrika hears with the help of cochlear implants. A young woman who believes in life’s ‘second chances’, today she strives to champion the same for the less privileged. It was during the height of Melbourne’s lockdown in August last year that the young solicitor who was freshly admitted to the Bar stumbled upon the Royal College SEARCH project (Spoken English at Royal College Hostel) which was launched in July the same year.

The origin of the use of elephants in Buddhist processions and festivals in Sri Lanka dates back to the period of the introduction of Buddhism to the country by Ven. Arahat Mahinda Thera, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. There is an oral tradition that the use of elephants in processions commenced during the 18th century CE, when the Dalada Perahera, conducted in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, was connected with Esala Perahera, the annual procession held in Kandy.

Fiery Citrus Salsa
INGREDIENTS
1green apple
2 fresh red chillies, halved and seeded
1garlic clove
8 fresh mint leaves
juice of 1 lemon
salt and ground black pepper
METHOD
1.Slice the bottom off the orange so that it stands
firmly on a chopping board. Using a large, sharp
knife, remove the peel slicing from the top of the
orange.
2.Fold the orange in one hand over the bowl.Slice
towards the middle of the fruit, to one side of a
segment, and then gently twist the knife to ease
the segment away from the membrane and out
of the orange. Remove to remove all of the segments
and squeeze any juice from the remaining membrane.
3.Peel the apple, slice it into wedges and remove
the core.
4.Place the chillies in a blender or food processor
with the orange segments and juice, apple wedges,
garlic and mint.
5.Process until smooth, with the motor running,
pour in the lemon juice.
6.Season, pour into a bowl or small pitcher and serve
immediately.
SERVES 4
This very unusual Salsa makes a fantastic marinade
for all kinds of shell fish, and it is deliciuos when drizzled
over freshly barbecued meat.
If you are feeling really fiery, don’t seed the chillies!
That will make the Salsa particularly hot and fierce!

 Daya Perera (93) of Arcadia, CA, passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2022. He was born on November 23rd, 1928, in Bandaragama, Sri Lanka. Daya was the beloved husband of Nanda Perera, loving son of late Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Magdalene Perera, devoted father of Chandima, Chatura, Dilumka, and Enoka. Father-in-law of Gayani, Saumya, Asanka and Nirosh. Caring grandfather of Sean, Ishara, Evan, Chathuni and Ryan. Loving brother of late Wimalaratne, Oscar, Late Owen, Late Denzil and Irangani. |

Neela Wickramasinghe (71) passed away in Italy. Best known for the song ‘Master Sir’ which was a huge hit in Sri Lanka. Neela is a recipient of the Sarasaviya Award, Presidential award, Sumathi tele award, Zonta award and Vanitha award. She was recently appointed as the Consul General of Sri Lanka in Milan. An engineer turned business woman turned Bank of Ceylon Chairperson turned social activist, Sumi (Sumithra) Moonesinghe is the jack of all trades and also a master of all. Venturing into spaces women rarely would, breaking norms and creating empires, Moonesinghe was someone who “goes against the tide” as stated by Savithri Rodrigo, the author of Moonesinghe’s memoir ‘Against the Tide’. The memoir was launched on 1 January at Moonesinghe’s residence.
