Sashee Chandran – Tea Drops

For Bringing Innovation to the Tea Industry

good news

The daughter of immigrants from China and Sri Lanka, Sashee Chandran grew up steeped in the ritual of making tea. But the slow process of brewing loose-leaf tea didn’t fit into her Silicon Valley tech schedule as a digital marketer at eBay. After tinkering in her kitchen, she finely ground and compressed the leaves into a product that simply dissolves in water—no tea bags or strainers required. Fast-forward five years and Tea Drops, the company, has raised $8.4 million to date and is on track to pull in eight figures in revenue in 2021. The product is on shelves in 2,000 retailers nationwide, including Whole Foods and Costco.

STEP 1

If Danmyeon noodles are long, carefully cut

the noodles with scissors to make them fit

the diameter of the diameter of the inner pot.

Lay the noodles in a criss-cross pattern to prevent

clumping.

and 3/4 cup of water until well combined.

top of the whole dish.

Should you have any questions or requests, please

This Korean Dish is absolutely lovely to look at and

a treat in it’s light but interesting flavours.

I am answering the first question which you will send.

The DANGMEON (sweet potato starch noodles) is not

difficult to find in the Asian Markets and are sold in

packets.

Simple to make and is not drowned in different flavors.

Enjoy this quick to make Dish.

Nizar Haji Omar

Twelve years have passed since June 22, 2009 when we lost our dear friend Nizar Haji Omar to a massive heart attack. When I think about my time with Haji, it was like we lost him yesterday. On that fateful day, Haji and I had breakfast together at 22 Layards Road, as we often did. Tragically, he had fallen from the chair in his office and because the bales of cloth blocking the view into his office room, none of his office colleagues realised that he was experiencing a heart attack. Haji was the consummate gentleman and touched the hearts of so many. His wife Linda meant everything to him along with his two daughters, Ayesha and Nadia. I know he cultivated special relationships with so many individuals, mostly stemming from his rugby career at St. Peter’s, CR and FC and Sri Lanka. – Jehan CanagaRetna

The ubiquitous “Anagi Lipa” introduced in an earlier decade, during a similar hike in LPG prices is fortunately still very much in use in the rural areas. It has the proven advantage of much higher combustion efficiency and thus reduced need for fire wood, in comparison to the traditional three stone furnace. This well designed and proven model has the great advantage of feasibility of the manufacture by the village potter at a very nominal cost.

Obituaries – Sad News

Elvis “Ricky” Thurgood (62), died peacefully in Melbourne on August 20, 2021. He was born in Ceylon in 1958.

Thurgood’s parents spent the past four decades caring for the former jockey, who suffered a traumatic brain injury and extreme physical deficits in a 1980 fall at Caulfield. Thurgood rode 58 winners from 533 starts before tragedy struck in the Easter Cup at Caulfield when his mount Taras Regent sustained a fatal heart attack and collapsed. Thurgood is survived by his parents Noel and Doris, brother Derek and sister Debbie as well as immediate family Brian, Wendy, Andrew, Kellie and Vanessa.

Mangala Samaraweera (65) passed away while being treated for COVID-19. He was being treated at a private hospital and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was being treated until his demise. Mangala Samaraweera previously served as Finance and Foreign Affairs Minister. Samaraweera entered politics from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party as its chief organizer in Matara in 1983 and first entered the Parliament of Sri Lanka as a representative of the Matara District in 1989. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs under President

Maithripala Sirisena.

I found Karma inexplicable that such an effective Politician was not only taken away prematurely, but we were also denied the right to pay our respects as well. In recent times, as Foreign Minister he ensured that our International relations were at their best ever. His period as Finance Minister saw us register with long overdue financial discipline, two consecutive years of primary revenue surpluses in 2017 and 18, for the first time after over fifty years . In a brief stint as Sports Minister he inspired Vijay Malalasekera’s Interim Committee to such an extent that we recorded our most successful years in International Cricket, with Integrity unquestioned ! Above all he was a very decent, humble, honest and civilised human being and was blessed in consequence with a Midas touch as his tenures will confirm. We can all stand proudly and say “ Here indeed was a true Statesman“. So Let us console ourselves that fate took him prematurely, to enable an early rebirth through his good Karma, and a path thereafter in Politics that will see him as the Head of State of a New Sri Lanka within forty years! A prosperous era when educated Parliamentarians will adorn that revered Institution, with Country,, ALL its people and self in that order as their priorities and a Parliament that will conduct its affairs with dignity making its people truly proud “Mangala” deserves that posthumous reward. In the Interim Dear Sir, Rest in Peace!

Dear Fellow Americans of Lankan Heritage

The “Tear drop” island of Sri Lanka is in tears with “Delta Variant” bleeding its heart very badly. Every 10 minutes a precious heart beat stops! The Country needs Oxygen today very badly. Oxygen Concentrator Machines can make Oxygen to be given to all patients who “Throng” hospitals today. Each unit can fill O2 cylinders in rural hospitals, thus reducing the transport of empty cylinders to Colombo for refilling.

The Cost of a Machine is said to be around $900 (Service agreement and installing in place). We have around 20 prominent  Sri Lankan Associations/OBU’s/Organizations in Southern California. If we all, get together as One Sri Lankan family (Eka Mavakage Du Daruwo) we could quite easily send 100 Oxygen Concentrators to Sri Lanka!

The Sri Lanka Foundation and SLAMANA (Medical Fraternity of North America) have sent container loads of Medical equipment to Sri Lanka and have responsible people on the ground to manage the distribution according to the need of Hospitals. We call upon the Sri Lanka Foundation under the leadership of Dr Walter Jayasinghe, to manage the logistics in sending and distributing the life giving Machines to Sri Lanka.

We, appeal to all associations in Southern California to consider this urgent request with compassion and activate the esteemed membership of each organization to give unconditionally towards this worthy cause. Please be kind enough to write checks/transfer through Zelle in favor of Sri Lanka Foundation (Ingrid@srilankafoundation.org). We assure,  a “Tax exemption certificate” will be given by SLF to all donations given in their name.

Let’s get-together, with a positive mindset in getting at least 5 units per Organization (5x 900 = $4,500.00). This Unit has been chosen in consultation with Dr Deepthi Jayasekera who is a Specialist Virologist living among us in Los Angeles.

Let’s “Tap” the pocket to relieve a “Beat” of a Heart!

This unique house is known as the house where the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the slain Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike and his family lived. SWRD was assasinated in this house. The house has long been known as “Tintagel” or “Rosmead House”. Discard the stomach sac and “dead men’s fingers,”   i.e. lungs and any green matter. Leave the creamy brown  meat in the shell and cut the shell in half with a cleaver or very sharp knife. Cut the body section in half and crack the claws with a hard blow from a hammer or cleaver. Avoid  splintering the claws. Repeat with the other crab.

2.Grind the shrimp paste, garlic, chillies and ginger to a paste with a pestle and mortar.*(I have an extra coffee grinder that is great for these small jobs)

  1. Heat a wok and add the oil. fry the spice paste, stirring

constantly, without browning.

Stir in the tomato ketchup, sugar and water and mix the sauce well. When just boiling, add all the crab pieces and toss in the sauce until well coated and hot. Serve in a large bowl, sprinkle with the spring onions. Place in the center of the table for every one to help themselves. Accompany this finger-licking dish with cool cucumber chunks and hot toast for mopping up the sauce, if you like.
